Babbette - Louisiana - Mardi Gras

Yay! I finally got my first doll repaint video online at Arlineology on YouTube! I am so excited to get this project off the ground. This doll is the first installment in my Dolls as U.S. States and Territories series. Since this project began during the Mardi Gras season, I thought it was only fitting to start with the state of Louisiana and their Mardi Gras festivals. Her name is Babbette and she will be wearing a white satin Marie Antoinette style dress with gold and white trim. She will also be wearing a white "pouf" style wig, gold earrings and gold shoes, and carrying strings of Mardi Gras beads in the official colors of Mardi Gras. Babbette's parade mask was made by my friend Nancy Jean White who makes and sells gorgeous artist masks throughout the year that are sold in a New Orleans shop and kiosk. I asked her if she could design something for me to fit my 11.5-inch fashion dolls and American Girl dolls and she most definitely did not disappoint. Thank you, Nancy, for your mini-masterpiece that really makes this doll so incredible. (It's even felt-lined so it won't scratch the finish on the face.) Please watch my video so I can build my YouTube page and if you wouldn't mind, please like, comment and subscribe. This will help me get my channel going and listed in the suggested videos area for more exposure. If you know of anyone interested in this kind of art, sharing the video would also be a great boost for my pages on Facebook and YouTube. Thank you so much!

Welcome to 2020!

Welcome, each and every one of you to 2020!  For some, it has been a great year and for others, maybe not so much.  Personally, it was a year of new discoveries and excitement, peppered with a few very significant defeats which I will not dwell on in this post.  My New Year's resolution last year was to focus on the positive, travel and expand my creative repertoire, which I believe I accomplished and thoroughly enjoyed.

I was fortunate to be able to travel outside of North America and include two new countries to my passport checklist.  In April, I had the opportunity to visit Scotland with one of my high school besties.  We stayed in the beautiful countryside of Dumbarton about 20 minutes from Glasgow and made several day trips to castles, woolen mills, the highlands, and several cities and towns in between.  It was an incredible memory that I will never forget.  The feeling of exploring one of my ancestral homes was simply beyond words.  (Except when driving, there were a lot of words then!)  September took my mother and me from "The Emerald City" of Seattle to "The Emerald Isles" of Ireland.  Another amazing trip, lots of new friends made, and memories to keep as we explored another ancestral home.

During this year of travel and discovery, I found new creative ventures and made a decision to start this blog and share my journey through the worlds of arts and crafts.  New skills are being built upon and hopefully soon, I will be ready to get my YouTube channel up and running so you can learn with me.  I already have the channel and it is also Arlineology.  I took down the personal YouTube channel where I used to share family-related content and plan to use the new account for all things Arlineology.   I am in the process of working the right technical details such as camera, lighting, sound, and format.

2020 will bring many more highlights, low-points, and personal growth for all of us.  My list of resolutions is similar to that of 2019 with a couple of new goals.

1.  Focus on the positive and learn from the negative.
2.  Share my passion for creativity.
3.  Learn a new language.
4.  See a Kenny Chesney concert.

Thank you for joining me here on Arlineology and Happy New Year 2020!  The following is a link to YouTube with a compilation of some of my favorite photos from 2019.  I hope you enjoy!

My Christmas Splurge For Art's Sake

So, after a long month of waiting, I finally received my Christmas present to myself.  I am new at O.O.A.K., (One Of A Kind), doll repaints.  I have started to collect Mattel Made to Move Barbies and up to this point, there were no fully articulated male dolls available.  This all changed with Mattel's new BMR1959 collection introduced earlier this year for adult collectors.

The BMR1959™ collection celebrates the fashion heritage of Barbie® and showcases how current trends influence the brand. These bold, fully posable dolls capture the diverse looks found in today’s streetwear culture. From high-low fashion mixes, re-imagined ‘90s gear to juxtaposed patterns, textures, and silhouettes, this curated ensemble is all about personal expression and style.

Today, my first order from this collection arrived and I was so excited to get in there and see my new guy, so let's do this...

My order was BMR1959 - GHT96.  GHT96 is packaged in a shoebox style container made of recycled cardboard.  The box has a signed, outline drawing of the doll inside.

The tissue paper inside the box is also a nice feature with the BMR1959 logo printed in black on white.  There is no excess of paper and it just covers the contents.

And there he is, GHT96.  He is a bold representation of the line with his brightly colored clothing and lime green crew cut.  His M2M body is perfect with abs and muscle tone that are apparent, but not over-exaggerated like most 12-inch male action figures.  He comes with a blue puffy coat, lime green short-alls, purple tank top, a chunky white chain necklace, black sunglasses, orange platform shoes, a certificate of authenticity, and a display stand with the BMR1959 logo.  His hair is flocked lime green.  He has pink nail polish and arched eyebrows.

The quality of this doll is excellent and he will be a great addition to my collection of articulating dolls for repainting.  As I said earlier, it is very difficult to find fully articulated male dolls on the market for this hobby.  So far, I have a few from Spin Master's Liv Doll line, but he only comes with one head sculpt, so there's that.  GHT96, (I really have to name him soon.), is a great start and I can't wait to order others from this collection.

Here is GHT96 next to a "work in progress" Monster High repaint.  More on her soon.  Bye!

Quick, Easy and Cheap Backdrop Ideas

Quick, Easy and Cheap - No, not your last date...  If you are wanting ideas for seasonal holiday photo backdrops, look no further than your kitchen pantry or linen closet.  Photos here show a backdrop and table cover simply draped with inexpensive, flannel-backed tablecloths available from most general merchandise type big box stores.  This fun buffalo check set up is made with two of these tablecloths from Walmart for the 2019 holiday season.

My friend and I decided we needed to take 2nd annual photos of our adorable, four-legged, wonder twerps and wanted something fun and festive that wouldn't break the bank.  Yards of fabric were out of the question since we have large families to buy for, so I did some digging and came up with this idea for our impromptu little living room studio.  We simply took the matching tablecloths from thanksgiving and placed the larger rectangular one over the backdrop frame and the smaller round one over the folding table base.  These tablecloths were $5.97 each.  The next step was placing props and lighting.

In retrospect, I would probably have done a quick press between towels on a low heat setting to remove the creases, but hindsight is 20/20.  Since this is a plaid, we did try to align the striping so as not to blind or confuse our audience.  Keep in mind if you use vinyl you will have some light reflection but you can use this to enhance the photo or with a little Photoshop knowledge, you can clone it out of the final image.

Next on the list, add your subject.  This is great for still life, pets, children or other portraits.  Simply wrangle your hissing cat, drooling pup, screaming tiny human or rabid rat, focus, click and done.  The backdrop can also be embellished after the fact by adding text overlays and Photoshop brushes and graphics as in this example.

A quick addition of a furry Santa bag, some pinecones, and a willing floofy friend and your backdrop becomes even more versatile.

While checking your stash of fine linens or timeworn treasures, keep your subject in mind.  Even the most well-behaved children, fur-faced buddies, or your favorite Aunt Mildred can have accidents and come with pre-installed sharp parts such as claws and teeth.  Please don't use delicate, nostalgic or historical items if Fido and Uncle Lester are a little testy or "on the sauce".

Other items that work well for backdrops or bases are paneling, fabric tablecloths, bedsheets, large pieces of fabric or felt and faux fur.  Experiment with a wide variety of colors and textures, depending on the mood of your planned photo and allow yourself to be surprised with the results.  On one pet photoshoot, the owner asked what I was doing with a large roll of kraft paper.  She was pleasantly surprised and the resulting photo was her favorite of the entire session.

King Ralphie lays upon a bed of black faux fur in front of a stained paneling sheet.

Ralphie is a lumberjack, but he don't care upon his seat of faux fur and his backdrop of black felt.

Sweet Pea longingly awaits the end of this photo session whilst sitting on her base of faux fur and backdrop down comforter.

Here we witness the elusive "frog dog" in his native environment upon the floor.  The shot was quickly captured before the ensuing army crawl to escape the bright lights and paparazzi of his international fame.

In the end, what is most important for your photoshoot is the comfort of your subject, the quality of your shot, and your happiness or that of your client for the session.  Just think, your Walmart tablecloth could be framed on your wall or that of your client for all to see as you sit at your table next Thanksgiving.

Have fun folks and Happy New Year one and all.

Welcome to Arlineology

Just a small-town girl, crafting her art out... lol.

My name is Arline Scott and I live in rural Washington State about 20 minutes south of Olympia.  I LOVE to make art of all kinds.  I am an avid photographer specializing in outdoor, natural light portraits.  I also enjoy card making, scrapbooking and paper crafting.  I dabble in art journaling, watercolors, rock painting, making dolls and doll clothing, and graphic design.  This page is going to combine all of my current interests into one conglomeration of all the weirdness and randomness that makes me who I am. Sort of a one-stop experience inside my head.

So, if you think you can handle all that I mentioned and would like to be a part of this madness, I welcome you to Arlineology
